PROTEST FOR DRASTIC MEASURES DUE TO LACK OF RAIN

The farmers and smallholders of  Calasparra-Cieza of the Tajo Segura Water Transfer will demonstrate for drastic measures to be introduced due to lack of water.
The Community of Farmers and Smallholders for the  Tajo Segura area of Calasparra-Cieza has announced there will be a demonstration on Friday November 3 at 12 midday at the gates of its offices, in the Puerto Errado area.
Measures already introduced mean from tonight, Thursday, mean some 350 members of the Community will not be able to water their 4,500 hectares of cultivated land.
“We are very worried about the lack of irrigation water, which will mean the loss of many trees, the loss of employment and of the wealth of the area,” explains a spokesperson for the Community.
One of the reasons for the lack of irrigation water is the curtailing of the water transfer from the Tajo to the Segura. The reservoirs of the Tajo, Entrepeñas and Buendía stand at 235 cubic hectares and there can be no water transfer when the reservoirs stand at less than 368 cubic hectares.
The President of the Canales del Taibilla Water Board, Adolfo Gallardo, has supported the protestors by asking Town Halls to boost awareness of how to save water due to the exceptional lack of rainfall.
