Today, June 15, 2017, is a very special day in the political calendar of Spain as it is exactly 40 years since the Spanish people were free to vote in a democratic election after years of dictatorship.
For many people it was their first taste of democracy as they had lived under the oppression of Franco for almost 40 years and many had to be shown how to vote.
The turnout in this first democratic election after Franco was over 80%.
