WORKERS PROTEST AGAINST STALEMATE AT COFRUSA

Nearly 500 employees of the Cofrusa company, owners of La Diosa plant in Calasparra, have marched on the region´s capital to demand that the President of the regional government, Ramón Luis Valcarcel, takes measures to save their jobs.

The Secretary General of the Agro Alimentary Federation of the CC OO, the union representing the workers, Santiago Navarro, confirmed that the unemployment levels in the areas affected by the Cofrusa factory closures had increased by 161%.

The Union places the blame for the factory closure squarely on the “disastrous management” of  Cofrusa, Grupo Halcón and Conservas La Diosa which, they claim, has led to the company calling a creditors meeting and suspending business which “is making the situation worse for thousands of families who do not have any other source of income.”

The Union claims regional Government “did not monitor the correct execution of public assistance which these companies have received.”

The President of the regional government has held meetings with the five mayors of the municipal areas affected by the closures including Calasparra and has declared he is committed to defending jobs in the region. However, Unions are demanding more action from the regional leader to maintain the 2,000 posts of employment at the company and the 5000 indirect employment posts connected with the industry.
