Work to repair the terraces along the river Segura at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Hope began today, after a seven year wait.
The 200,255,00 euro project to restore the terraces is 80% financed for EU fund FEDER and 20% by CARM.
Some 175 metres of the lower terrace was washed away by the swollen caudal of the river in 2013.
The work consists of demolition of the old wall, removal of the debris, and the construction of a breakwater consisting of large stone blocks, which will be filled, compacted and paved. The security barrier, benches, signposting and autochthonous plants will be replaced.
The whole project is expected to take four months and this is the first stage of the work.
Today the Mayoress of Calasparra,Teresa Garcia with councilors from Calasparra Town Hall, the President and members of the Sanctuary Commission were accompanied by The Head of the regional Department of Agriculture and the Director General of the Department of Environment to witness the start of the project.
