Calasparra is the only high mountain producer of DOP (Denomination of Origin) rice in Spain and this is one of the reason the town is one of the finalists in the regional competititon «Town of the Year.»

The competititon, «Town of the Year» is the iniaitive of the Iberian Press and the regional newspaper, La Opinion, and aims to recognise and distinguish
the efforts made by towns through their businesses, entities and people who facilitate everyday the perogress of their areas.
