History has been broken in Calasparra as the River Segura breaks its banks flooding the first terrace at the Sanctuary.
The recent heavy rains have swollen the caudal of the river to historic proportions and water from local reservoirs, which are in danger of spilling over, has added to the flow.
The terraces at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Hope have disappeared under a torrent of wáter forcing the new Management Committee of the Sancuitary to cordon the area off for safety reasons.
The new President of the Committee, Antonio José Egea, has announced therre is “no risk” and that “everything is under control.”
The Mundo river and the level of the reservoirs, such as the Cenajo, have been emptied into the river to “avoid worse dangers” and in the wake of further rainfall.
The swollen river has thrown up some strange images for Calasparra including the disappearance of the steps outside the canoe club.
