WATER BOARD ADVISES FARMERS NOT TO PLANT WINTER CROPS

A meeting of the Segura Water Board (CHS) has advised farmers not to plant winter crops as, due to the current severe drought, reductions in irrigation water supplies may reach 42% for drop irrigation sysrems and 57% for traditional irrrigation sytems.
The Board reports that water supplies are «continually diminishing» due to the lack of rainfall with reservoirs at around 25% capacity.
As a result the current reductions in irrigation water, of 35% for drop irrigation systems and 50% for traditional systems, will be maintained but may be increased if the severe drought continues.
The Water Board insists irrigation water supply will not be cut but considers savings are necessary.
