Two people have been arrested for animal cruelty after an anonymous source sent a video of two men ferociously beating a dog with a stick on a plot of land in Calasparra (Update see Editor´s Note below)
The Guardia Civil named the investigation «Operation Stick» and thanks to the cooperation of local residents, were able to clarify a case of animal cruelty, the location of the plot of land and the identification of the two people who were later charged with crimes against animals.
The operation began two weeks ago when a video was received by local police showing two people striking a medium sized dog with great cruelty until the animal was prostrate on the ground, immobile and exhausted.
The case was transferred to SEPRONA to investigate and clarify the facts by watching the video, provided by a resident, that showed a person pick up a stick and beat the dog with six heavy blows before passing the stick to another person who, with even more cruelty, beat the animal with 12 blows until it was immobile on the ground.
After analyzing the video the officers continued the investigation discovering where the incident had ocurred and identifying the two people involved..
The Guardia Civil wish to clarify that without the collaboration of the public this crime would not have been unc0vered.
The current Penal Code, articles 340 bis and 350 ter states that anyone who abandons a vertebrate animal under his/her responsibility in conditions that could endanger the life or integrity of that animal would be punished with six months prison or community work for 31 days. Likewise they will be banned from any profession, office or business related to animals and prohibited from owning any animal.
Furthermore, the Guardia Civil, animal protection unit, SEPRONA, asks any member of the public who knows of anyone who abandons or ill treats an animla to report the incident (s) to seprona@guardiacivil.org
