The Town Halls of Calasparra and Cehegin have opposed the constrution of a rubbish tip on the Sierra del Puerta, near Valentin.
The application for the rubbish tip was made by the company6, 3RS Gestión MA SOSTENIBLE, S.L and granted by the regional government of Murcia.
At a meeting on Wednesday, José Vélez and José Rafael Rocamora, Mayors of Calasparra and Cehegin, respectively, were joined by representatives of the hamlets directly affected by the proposal, such as Valentin and Canara, as well as members of the different politcal parties.
The Mayor of Cehegin said the first step would be “ an exhaustive revision of the proposal by technical experts.»
The Mayor of Calasparra said he could not understand how authority could be given for a plant of this type in an area close to centres of population, areas protected by ZEPA and LIC conservation orders, the reservoir and within 50 metres of a main road.
According to José Velez what had been envisaged as a recycling plant in 2011 could change into a rubbish tip of grand proportions.
“Our position is clear,” he said, “We are not going to allow the installation of a rubbish tip: It would be predjudicial to people all over the region and we are going to tell the regional government that.”
Both Town Halls will present motions at their full council meetings demanding that work stops on the proposed site and underlining their opposition.
