Next Easter is now the target for the official opening of Corvera aiport according to the President of the regional government, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, who is attempting to expedite legal proceedings in order to put the management of the airport out to tender as soon as possible.
According to sources close to the Autonomous Community moves are afoot to accelerate the tendering process which could take place this summer.
The regional Government must wait for the judiciary to consider representations by Aeromur objecting to the rescinding of its contract earlier this year. A month after this process has been completed the search for a new management company, which will open the airport next Easter, can begin. However, the opening of the new aiport is considered “not to be viable” whilst flights continue from San Javier.
Work at Corvera was completed more than a year and a half ago but Aeromur demanded the regional Government put six million euros in compensation on the table before they opened Corvera if San Javier airport remained opened. The regional Government refused and demanded the company open the airport immediately. This spring the regional government rescinded Aeromur´s contract. Aeromur objected. Now the judicial process is underway.
The saga continues.
