The Department of Agriculture has introduced the figure of the Environmental Operator in the Mar Menor who, from today, will monitor and assess if farmers are obeying the law which aims to protect the sea.
Following various inspections in the Mar Menor basin the Department of Agriculture has discovered that “mistakes” are being made in the application of the law concerning the control of irrigation water and fertilizers and the use of vegetable barriers.
Now the farmers must employ technical experts in regional law and from October all producers and businesses in the Campo de Cartagena will be obliged to adapt their land and production to the law.
The Minister of Agriculture, Antonio Luengo, says this marks a “before and after” for the Mar Menor.
