The earth shook in Abanilla last night registering 3.8 on the Richter scale and sending shockwaves and panic rippling across the region.
The first tremor was felt at 9pm and was followed by nine or 10 further tremors centred mainly in the small village of Barinas on the outskirts of Abanilla.
Just two months after the devastating earthquake shook Lorca the tremors caused widespread panic and many local residents abandoned their houses around 11.39 when the first main tremor, 1.9 on the Richter scale, was registered with its epicenter on the motorway that connects Fortuna and Abanilla.
At just before 1am the strongest tremor, 3.8 on the Richter scale was registered and the replicas continued for nearly two hours until 2.22am.
Local police and emergency services report that residents began to return to their homes around 5.30 to 6am. No injuries or structural damage was reported.
