SIX NATIVE TURTLES RELEASED INTO CAÑAVEROSA

Today, the Cañaverosa Natural Reserve has six new native turtles (Mauremys leprous) otherwise known as the Galapagos Turtle, which will breed and aid the biodiversity and assist the protection of the natural species of the park.
In our picture, the Mayoress, Teresa Garcia, releases one of the turtles into the river.
The turtles were recovered, during April and May, in the the Valley Recovery Centre for Wild Fauna in Murcia. The specimens released were different sexes to aid reproduction in the wild and also different ages: young and adult.
Although the main object of the project is to enhance the native fauna it also serves to raise awareness of the invasive species such as the Florida turtles, whose release into the wild is prohibited. Neither is it recommended to feed wild animals, given that there is ample food for them in their natural habitat, because this could have adverse effects on their health.
