The two access roads to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Hope have been closed due to flooding as a result of the 116 litres of rain which has fallen per square merre in Calasparra during the recent storms.
The road leading to the Olivarejo, the lower Sanctuary road, and the road from Los Viveros to the Sanctuary have both been closed due to flooding and the danger of landslides.
However, the emergency services have announced there have been “no grave incidents l.ocally due to the inclement weather.
The Mayor of Calasparra, Jose Velez, sent a message of calm to local residents saying: “We have been worried about the effects of days of torrential raint but fortunately we have had no serious incidents in Calasparra and the systems installed to deal with heavy rainfall have functioned well.”
However, he appealed to members of the public to alert the Town Hall to any situations where intervention was required or work needed to be carried out.
Residents are advised by the local police to only use their cars when strictly necessary until the rain abates.
