Residents fear they may have inhaled toxic fumes as the result of a fire at the controversial rubbish tip at the Sierra del Puerto in Valentin yesterday evening.
The Residents’ Association of Valentin is demanding explanations from the company running the tip regarding the toxicity of the smoke and the effect of the fire on the surrounding soil.
Firefighters were called out to the blaze, in one of the pits where rubbish has accumulated since the tip was opened, at 7pm last night, Sunday.
The Residents’ Association of Valentin, with the support of Calasparra and Cehegin, opposed the opening of the tip in an area protected by a ZEPA Bird Protection Order.
The tip has opened despite pending legal action to prevent it.
