Some 78 train services have been suspended, since last Tuesday, due to damage to the rails and/or fences during mass protests in Murcia demanding that the high speed service, AVE, is constructed underground.
Among the service disrupted are 48 local services, Alicante-Murcia and Murcia-Alicante; 14 medium distance services, Cartagena-Murcia, and 16 long distance services between Madrid and Barcelona.
There have been a series of massive protests in Murcia city which have barely made the headlines on the Spanish news or in the national newspapers, but have been widely featured on social media sites.
The main objection is the proposal that the AVE service will arrive in Murcia overland, behind a wall, which will divide the city and do little to control noise or contamination.
The protestors demand that the original commitment: that the AVE would pass through Murcia city via tunnels, should be honoured.
