RED X AND TOWN HALL LAUNCH PROJECT FOR PEOPLE WITH IMPAIRED COGNITIVE FUNCTION

The local branch of the Red Cross and Calasparra Town Hall have joined forces to present a social project, funded by the  Department of Social Policy, Families and Equality through the IRPF Solidarity Funds, for people with impaired cognitive function.
During a press conference launching the project in the Museo de la Villa the Mayoress of Calasparra, Teresa Garcia, was joined by the Head of the local Social Policy Department, Juan Jose Lopez, and, representing the Red Cross, the Director of the Programme for the Elderly, Disabled and Tele Asistencia,  Marisa Gomez;  the technical expert of the local project, Alba Monteagudo, and Francisco Morcillo, President of the Red Cross, Calasparra.
Since last year the Red Cross has been working with elderly people in Calasparra through the «Red Cross for the Elderly: Get Involved» programme. During this project the Red Cross has worked closely with elderly people in Calasparra and has identified the need to implant activities linked to the prevention of cognitive deterioration.
The Town Hall has collaborated in this project since the beginning with initiatives within the Municipal Plan Against Lonliness.
Elderly people are an important sector of the community who need to be supported in an integral form in order to discover for themselves their own characteristics and necessities, in this stage of their lives, which would aid their personal development and autonomy.
The deterioration of cognitive functions are one of the main problems which negatively affect the quality of life for elderly epople, accelerating their dependence. Elderly people also have a stupendous opportunity to learn and thus strengthen and reinforce cerebal connections.
The objectives of the Project are to improve the quality iof life of elderly people in the process of ageing by reducing the inequalies between the sexes and maintain and/or improve the cognitive functions of memory, attention, language, calculation, orientation and reasoning, of men and women over 65 yars old, in order to enable them to continue with the basic activities of everyday life.
Anyone over 65 years old who is interested in:
• Improving  or maintaining cognitive functions
•Improving their autonomy and independence in everyday life
• Making a change or developing by aquiring new skills and/or knoiwledge
