The water reserves in the reservoirs of the Segura basin have grown by 43.5 million cubic metres during the first part of November compared to an average of 30 cubic metres in previous years.
The Water Confedeartyio has assured local farmers that there is now sufficient water for traditional irrigation in the basin until next October.
Rains locally are particularly benefiting the areas of “secano” (without irrigation) such as almond and olive groves by watering and cleaning the trees.
The Head of the regional Department of Agriculture and Water has declared that the “hydraulic year has started wonderfully.”
From October 1 to yesterday the total rainfall in the Segura basin was 1,986 hectametres, more than the previous wet periods in 2007 and 2009. It has rained six times more than the same period last year with an average rainfall of 103 litres per square metre.
Although October was the driest for years this November is heading for the record books as the wettest!
