The current Mayor of Calasparra, Jose Velez, and his PSOE party swept to a landslide victory yesterday, virtually wiping out the opposition in the process.
The ruling PSOE gained 11 seats and an absolute majority at the Town Hall.
The Partido Popular took just four seats and Calasparra Viva and Ciudadanos took one seat each.
There was a 31.27 abstention rate and a voter turnout of around 68%.
The United Left and Green Party lost their seat at the Town Hall.
It was a very different story four years ago when the PSOE and opposition parties gained the same number of seats giving the casting vote to Ricardo Garcia of the United Left and Greens. However, yesterday Ricardo Garcia, who had formed part of the PSOE local government during the past four years, lost his seat as councilor.
After the results were announced Jose Velez said: “The citizens have given us majority support and we will thank them by working with more enthusiasm and effort. I am very grateful to Calasparra for putting their trust in me again.”
The disappointing news of the night was the low participation of UK residents in the elections. At 6.30pm yesterday only five UK residents had voted, despite Nexonr publishing the party´s electoral programmes and a clear explanation of how to vote.
