The European Commission has approved a 3.4 million euro Project to level out the 54 kilometres of the river Segura between Abarán and Cañaverosa (Calasparra) to eliminate barriers for the population of fish.
This project will facilitate various species of fish currently unable to survive in the river due to dips, dykes and differences in the level of the river bed.
The work is expected to take four years and is the first Project in the programme, Programa Life+, led by the Spanish Water Board.
