A 29 year old man from Caravaca, allegedly responsible for two fires in the Calasparra area during February, was found next to the seat of a fire at Peralejo, near the railway lines.
Guardia Civil officers discovered the man with a quantity of prescription drugs, which he was consuming.
Some four hectares of forest was destroyed in the two fires.
During February and following the first fire, the Guarda Civil had mounted guards in forest areas near the railway lines which pass through Calasparra. At the end of the month there was another fire, near the site of the first, which destroyed three hectares of pine, lower mountain slopes and bushes.
The alarm was raised by residents working on agricultural land nearby.
After the fire was extinguished the officers searched the area and discovered the alleged pyromaniac with a lighter and a large quantity of anti-depressant and anti-psychotic drugs.
Next to the seat of the fire the officers found a blister packet of drugs similar to those in possession of the suspect.
The man has been charged with intentionally causing two forest fires and has appeared before magistrates in Caravaca.
