Saturday was the day Pedro Sanchez, fulfilled his promise made during the leadership elections in the PSOE, to return to Calasparra as President.
He was greeted by more than 4,000 flag waving enthusiasts chanting “Presidente” as he made his way through the crowds, accompanied by the Mayor of Calasparra, José Vélez.
He was in Calasparra to endorse the candidates for the local Town Hall, the regional assembly and the European Parliament.
The Mayor of Calasparra was a vociferous supporter of Sanchez during a hard fought and bitter leadership contest, during which Sanchez refused to negotiate a coalition with the right wing PP and resigned his seat.
He won the leadership competition, mainly due to grassroots support, which was amply demonstrated on Saturday in Calasparra.
He became President of Spain after winning a vote of censor in the National Congress following judicial decisions confirming corruption in the PP.
He went on to win the General Elections on April 28 this year.
Sanchez told supporters on Saturday he was asking for the vote in municipal and regional areas because this was the only way Spain could move forward. He needed the autonomous and municipal governments to develop laws in education, support the Dependents Law, for young people, the fight against domestic violence and to make the Socialist Party more effective, he said.
Sanchez took time out to personally greet a delighted crowd waiting outside the bullring after the meeting before going on to his next election event.
OVER 4,000 WELCOME THE PRESIDENT OF SPAIN TO CALASPARRA
