The regional government of Murcia has announced that drinking and eating at the bar in restaurants and bars in the region will be suspended with immediate effect as part of the fight to contain the Covid-19 epidemic.
The municipal area of Archivel, with a population of 1,200, has been isolated with controls on those who enter and leave. A barbecue is thought to be the source of the cluster with 22 positive cases.
These latest measures have been announced as the seemingly unstoppable rise in infections suggests a second wave of the virus has hit the region.
On Wednesday statistics showed a record 430 new contagions in 24 hours and this has brought new restrictions including a 100 person limit on any events with crowds or large groups. Weddings, baptisms, communions and funerals are limited to 15 guests inside and 25 outside.
The regional Department of Health has declared “hopeful” the situation in Lorca and Mula as the number of infections stabilizes.
The areas with the highest incidence of infections are Fuente Alamo, Jumilla, Lorqui, Lorca, Totana, Mula and various areas of Murcia town. Some 40% of the 225 patients admitted to hospital are less than 50 years-old.
There are currently 10 active cases in Calasparra.
