The protocol for the issue of licences to burn garden and agricultural waste has changed and licences are no longer the responsibility of the Forestry and Fire Brigade.
Currently, no licences are being issued, partly due to the high risk of forest fires as a result of high temperatures and partly due to the controversy.
The regional government of Murcia had decided to pass the responsibility for issuing the licences onto the local Town Halls. However, local authoritites, including Calasparra, have asked the Goverment to reconsider this position and have suspended the issue of the licences, meantime.
Caravaca de la Cruz, Cehegín, Bullas, Moratalla and Calasparra Town Halls claim they do not have the expertise required to issue these licences.
They have demanded a rapid decision as leaving branches etc in the fields after pruning may have a detrimental effect on the small holdings and farms as well as the environment.
