A new EU border control system will be introduced in the first part of next year which will register every person crossing the border.
The Entry/Exit System (EES) will be an automated IT system for registering travellers from third countries (this now includes the UK). It will apply to short stay visa holders and visa exempt visitors.
It will register a person´s name, the type of travel document, biometric data such as finger prints and facial images, and the date of entry and exit.
This new system will enforce the time restrictions on non EU citizens visiting in an EU country.
The EES will replace the manual stamping of passports which does not provide reliable data on border crossings and does not detect over stayers.
This will not apply to those who hold residency in an EU country. For example, those who have a green residency document or TIE in Spain.
It will affect those who have not taken out residency and are currently subject to restrictions on their length of stay.
