A national suicide helpline, 024, has been started in Spain to try and reduce the number of suicides.
The helpine is available 24 hours a day, seven days week, and is manned by professionals from the Red Cross who also have resources to deal with calls in different languages.
It is free of charge and is connected to emergency services in regions and cities.
This service aims to make the issue of suicide more visible and remove the stigma and taboos and support those contemplating suicide and their families and friends.
It is free of charge, accessible, immediate and confidential.
Suicide is the most common cause of external death in Spain and the main cause of death amongst young people.
In 2020 3,491 suicides were registered, 7.4% than the previous year.
