The earth shakes more in the region of Murcia than any other part of Spain, according to the National Geographical Institutute (IGN).
However, most are imperceptible to normal human beings due to their low intenstity: only being recorded by sophisticated detection equipment.
In the region more tremors are detected on the outskirts of Molina del Segura; Murcia; on the fringe east of Lorca and passing by Alhama de Murcia; and Lorquí and Cieza. Less earthquakes are detected in Mula, Caravaca and Calasparra.
The friction between the African and Euro-Asian plates are the cause of this activity in the fault lines that cross the region. According to IGN, these plates are “ in continual movement and are very active”.
The last earthquake in the region was just over a week ago with its epicentre in Ossa de Montiel, Albacete, which registered 5.2 on the Richter scale. The tremors were felt in Calasparra.
