Since Christopher Columbus discovered Amercia on Ocdtober 12 1492 this date has had a special significance for the Spanish and South Americans alike and it is a national fiesta day in both places.
However, the name of the fiesta has changed: first it was called the Day of the Race; then the Day of the Hispanidad; but from 1987 to the present time it has been named the Day of National Fiesta.
