The Mayor of Calasparra, José Velez, took the skies in a helicopter earlier this week to see the fire damage in the Almadenes Canyon for himself.
He was accompanied by the Head of the regional Presidencia, Maria Dolores Pagán; the Head of Water, Agriculture and Environment, Adela Martínez Cachá, and the mayors of Cieza, and Lorca.
The group were flown overall the areas affected by the forest fires which started last Thursday during an electric storm.
The canyon itself, the river and the Banks, have not been affected, but external walls where the canyon begins and surroundings areas have burned.
Ricardo Garcia, representative for the United Left, has reported on Facebook that the beauty of the Almadenes Canyon is “intact” and visitors should not be deterred from enjoying this local beauty spot.
The Mayor has also expressed his satisfaction that the fire did not reach one of the environmental treasures of the region, the Almadenes Canyon, and expressed his gratitute to the fire fighting and emergency forces.
