MAYOR CALLS FOR FRACKING TO BE OUTLAWED

The Mayor of Calasparra, Jesus Navarro, has called on the regional government to make fracking, a technique for extracting gas by pumping water and chemicals underground in order to extract gas, illegal in Murcia.
“The PSOE are opposed to these practices which are so aggressive and are well known worldwide for their toxic effects on the environment. We trust that no projects using these techniques will be approved in the region of Murcia.”
The Mayor says there is a high risk of contamination for
underground wells and a risk of tremors from fracking: an old technique dating back to 1860 when nitroglicerine was employed.
“We are worried that the contamination by highly toxic gases and other future toxic products could affect the future of agriculture in the region in the irrigation areas of Tajo-Segura between Calasparra and Cieza.”
The Mayor is also concened about the increased risk of tremors particularly along the Socovos fault line.
The PSOE are urging the regional government to rescind authorization given to companies to carry out perforations in North East Murcia.
