Yesterday (Tuesday) was the International Day of the Red Cross and the International Red Crescent movement commemorating the founder, Henri Dunant.
Dunant formed the movement in 1859 after he witnessed the Battle of Solferino in Italy when 12,000 people died and 10,000 were wounded.
The Red Cross has a presence in 187 countries around the world and has more than 80 million volunteers.
The local Red Cross has 114 members and 104 volunteers. The president is Francisco Morcillo. The movement has several programmes designed to fight poverty and social exclusion and also has an emergency service.
