Calasparra will mark the International Day for the Gypsy Community on Sunday April 8 with a special event in the Casa de la Cultura.
At 12 midday on Sunday there will be commemorative act in the presence of members of the gypsy community of Calasparra and led by the Head of the Department of Culture and Education, Teresa Garcia. A manifesto will be read, the hymn sung and the flag raised.
The aim of this international day is to give visibility to the community and raise awareness of their exclusion from society.
The date, April 8, marks the anniversary of the First World Congress of Roma/Gypsies held in London in 1971 when the flag and the hymn were inaugurated.
The Roma/Gypsy community suffers prejudice and exclusion and has been persecuted throughout their history: also suffering at the hands of the Nazis during the second world war.
