There are differences in the way our English speaking customers like to eat their vegetables and the way the Calasparrians like theirs: and one of the main ones is new potatoes.
While our Spanish hosts search out the biggest new potatoes on the market many British customers are seeking the small, sweet new potatoes. Generally the Calasparrians peel their potatoes and the British don´t!
We are able to offer a variety of large new potatoes, small sweet ones and tiny gem potatoes perfect for salads this week on the ecological stall outside the Sangui supermarket.
You can peel them by gently rubbing them they are so fresh but why bother? Most of the goodness is in the skin and as we don´t use any chemicals or artificial fertilizers they are completely safe to eat intact.
A great favourite in our house is tiny new potatoes boiled in a little water (not covered) with a couple of spoonfuls of olive oil, a pinch of saffron threads and crushed garlic: perfect hot or cold served with their juice. Or you can parboil them and roast them with fresh rosemary picked in the mountains and crushed garlic for a perfect accompaniment to grilled meat. Or simply boil them in their skins, finely chop some onions and/or chives and mix in some mayonnaise for a perfect potato salad.
We also have tomatoes, including cherries, round marrows perfect for stuffing, fresh beetroot, onions and tiny “pardon” peppers.
Unfortunately, the hot weather means all the lettuces have bolted and are not suitable for sale.
We open at around 9am.
