IMPORTANT CHANGES TO THE TRAFFIC LAWS

Yesterday the Government announced changes to the current laws which will increase points on the your driving licence for using a mobile phone at the wheel, cut speed limits in urban areas and regulates the use of mobility vehicles.
A Government spokesperson said that since the introduction of the Penalty Points System on driving licences road traffic accidents had fallen by 57.2%. But that certain actions by drivers continued to put their lives and the lives of others at risk.
The speed limits will come into effect in six months to allow time for new sign posting and for raising awareness of the changes amongst road users.

New Penalty Points System
The penalty for driving with a mobile phone in your hand will incur six points instead of the current three.
Driving without a seat belt, a child seat or appropriate child restraints or a motorcycle helmet and other forms of protection will incur four points instead of the current three.
Drivers will be able to recuperate two points by taking DGT special driving courses.

Speed Limits in Urban Areas
One way street with pavement – 20kph
One way system – 30kph
Two way street with two or more lanes – 50kph

(Note: Introduction of new speed limits delayed for six months)

Mobility Vehicles
Must comply with the same regulations as other vehicles and must have a certificate of circulation.
They were banned from circulating on pavements, pedestrian areas, interurban roads, crossing, urban tunnels, motorways and expressways.
