HOT WEATHER HITS RICE HARVEST

There will be less Calasparra rice than usual this year.
As the harvest comes to a close the farmers are counting the cost of the hot weather, hail and thunder storms which have reduced their yield.
Most of the rice has already been collected although harvests in Obregate, Macaneo and Las Minas still have to be brought in. At this point the full production figures for this year will be unveiled. However, the total is expected to be a much lower figure than usual.
The D.O. rice of Calasparra is sold under two labels: the Cooperativa del Campo “Virgen de la Esperanza”, which processes and sells 95% of the rice produced; and Juan Haro e Hijos, under the trade name “Flor de Calasparra” which produces the Bomba and Balilla X Sollana types of rice.
