Farmers and small holders in Calasparra who want to modernize their irrigation system and take advantage of the EU grant which covers 70% of the cost have received the green light.
The agonizing is finally over as the vote on Saturday was overwhelming in support of the new pressurized irrigation drop irrigation system. There were 3,300 votes in favour giving the “yes” vote an ample majority and exceeding the 250 “no” votes in the previous assembly.
The assembly on Saturday was the second attempt to hold a vote for all members of the Associaton of local farmers and smallholders. The first vote, before the fiestas, was disrupted by members opposed to the modernisation and was eventually postponed due to “public disorder.”
Last Saturday the local police and Guardia Civil had a strong presence at the Municipal Auditorium. In order to avoid a repitition of disruption by the opposition voters were allowed to enter the auditórium one at a time. A move which the opposition has declared “illegal” and have reported to the Guardia Civil in Caravaca.
After the vote the executive of the Association left the Auditorium under the protection of the Guardia Civil. Members of the opposition booed, hissed an hurled insults at the executive as they left.
