FRENCH SURFERS WARNED BY EMAIL ABOUT ILLEGAL DOWNLOADING

More than 100,000 French surfers have received warnings from the newly formed national watchdog organization for illegally downloading multi media contents subject to the rights of the author on the Internet.

Since the administrative authority, Hadopi, was formed last October to “fight against pirating on the Internet” it has sent out 200 email warnings every day.

This is the first stage of the “gradual mechanism” adopted by France which threatens to “cut off” repeat offenders from the Internet for a maximum of a year.

The second phase of the process started in January when another email accompanied by a registered letter was dispatched to persistent offenders.  This is the final warning before the case is transferred to the Courts which may impose a fine and/or disconnection from the Internet.

Hadopi was created after three years of debate at the beginning of 2010.
