FRACKING IN THE NEW YEAR IN CALASPARRA?

The company, Oil and Gas Capital, who have had a licence for fracking in Calasparra since 2013, have plans to start early this year.
The licence covers an old natural well called River Segura G-1 and the regional administration is currently awaiting an environmental impact report before giving the company the green light.
Protests have already begun with members of the Cuenca del Segura Libre de Fracking (Segura Basin Free from Fracking) Platform demonstrating yesterday on the site of the proposed works.
The Socialist, PSOE, party is opposing the move at regional and local level on  the grounds that fracking could contaminate underground water supplies.
All three Town Halls affected by the plans: Calasparra, Cehegin and Moratalla, are opposed to fracking in their areas.
The Mayor of Calasparra, Jose Velez, promised yesterday: “We will not stay quiet. We are opposed to the extraction of gas through fracking. This would be shameful.”
