After several attempts the local farmers and small holders have finally voted in favour of the second phase of the project to modernise the irrigation systems in Calasparra logging almost 4,0000 votes in favour.
The project will consist of a general network with water pipes connected to every property signed up to the new scheme. Property owners will pay the 30% of the scheme not covered by the EU grant: 15% during the first two years and 15% in 2026.
The Mayor of Calasparra, Jesus Navarro, told Radio Calasparra he was “very satisfied” with the result which affects 1,100 hectares and will create between 200 and 300 jobs.
He said the project was “the most important for Calasparra for 10 years”
All the local cooperatives and agricultural businesses are in favour of the modernisation which constitutes a new impetus for employment especially for young people.
The opposition to the modernisation has lodged two complaints: firstly that the vote was “secret” and second that the voters should have been allowed to enter the auditórium all at once.
