The Town Hall has approved a motion calling on the regional and national governments to take urgent measures to help thousands of agriculture workers who face hardship after 25,000 tons of fruit in the region was destroyed by the frosts in February.
The motion calls for a special plan to alleviate unemployment caused by the loss of the harvest estimated at some 19 million euros. In addition to an increased budget to support families without income and in danger of social exclusion the motion urges the administrations to take measures to support the farmers and protect fixed employment.
José Vélez told Radio Calasparra that the situation was “very grave for families who earn their livings through agriculture”.
