The reputation of the Municipal Canoe Club and School has never been higher with 32 local children on its books, a canoeist in the Spanish National team, medals and titles and now, funds from Europe to promote white water events.
Club directors and members were in the mood for celebrating at last Saturday´s Open Day when visitors were able to try out various sports including canoeing and rock climbing.
The Club has recently recieved three major boosts; 23,000 euros from EU funds to promote white water canoeing; an agreement with the Department of Environment to plant 50 ash trees near the Canoe Club Headquarters; and an agreement with the University of Murcia which means activities will be all year round at the Club for members of all ages.
At the Open Day, the Head of Local Sports and Tourism, Jordi Arce, explained that Calasparra was becoming more and more well known for its Canoe School which had achieved great things this year including the Andalusian Cup and four medals in the First National Cup for Promising Youngsters.
Also carrying the standard for the Club was Juan Martinez, currently training to represent his country in the Olympics.
