The discovery of an otter trapped in the dam at Cieza a few days ago has led ecologists, politicians and farmers to declare the River Segura is clean, healthy and can be adapted for drinking water.
The animal forms part of a colony which was totally absent in the area but now uses the corridor between Ojos and the Almadenes canyon as its natural habitat. Although there has be no census the reappearance of the otter in the river experts now believe there are more of the animals in the river passing through Calasparra and Moratalla.
Investigations into a project to treat the river water for human consumption was announced a few weeks ago.
