EMERGENCY WORK ON ARGOS RESERVOIR DRAINAGE SYSTEMS

Emergency work to restore the drainage systems of the Argos reservoir, costing 960,000 euros, has begun with the principal aim of recuperating the secondary spillway that connects with the Quipar river.
The work consists of removing the sediments accumulated in the loading channel; the analysis of materials removed; the creation of a specific access to facilitate work on the canal; and the excavation of materials from a 250 metre long and 40 metre wide stretch of the canal.
The material removed will be transported to an authorized point.

The heavy rainfall in March demonstrated the importance of hydraulic infrastructures that are prepared and in perfect working order in order to gurantee the security of the population. The accumulation of sediments during the rains of October and March  significantly reduced the drainage capacity of the canal making emergency intervention essential in order to safeguard the correction functioning of the reservoir and allow for a rapid response in the face of heavy rainfall, acting in time to avoid major risks.
October´s heavy rainfall facilitated a significant quantity of materials being dragged into the canal that, although not compromising the operation of the dam, reduced the capacity to evacuate the reservoir. For this reason the CHS (Water Board) considered urgent action a priority in order to ensure that the infrastructures function efficiently in the event of more heavy rain.
Work on the reservoir basin has been completed permitting its connection to the Argos-Quipar canal, however,  work on the canal itself, that has suffered considerable deterioration, continues.
Tbis work was declared an emergency on January 14 2025 and is expected to be finished within 12 months.
