Diesel is no longer the cheap option for motorists and this week the cost of diesel at the pumps rose above the price of lead free petrol at 1,315 euros a litre.
The price of diesel has not exceeded that of lead free petrol since 2009 and now stands at a Little more tan a cent away from its historic maximum in July 2008.
During the last month the price of petrol has dropped by 0.30% to 1,310 euros a litre while diesel has in creased in `rice by 1.94%, according to the Petrol Bulletin of the European Union.
However, during the last week the price of lead free petrol rose by 0.38% and diesel by 1.62%. Over the last year the price of diesel has risen by 18% and petrol by 10.08%. The cost of filling up a 55 litre tank now costs 72.05 euros, 6.6 euros more than a year ago while filling up with diesel costs 72.38 euros, 11 euros more than last year.
However, compared to the rest of Europe fuel prices in Spain are lower than average.
