CHEMISTS IN THE REGION THREATEN TO CLOSE IF REGIONAL GOVERNMENT FAILS TO SETTLE DEBT

The regional network of Dispensing Chemists and the Official College of Pharmacists of Murcia have taken a full page advertisement in La Verdad regional newspaper to inform the public that all chemist shops in the region will close from May 9 because they are “running out of medicines.”
“The chemists and the Distribution Warehouses are unable to take on this unsustainable situation of outstanding payments and debt,” says the statement, “if we have not been paid or have not reached an agreement by May 9 we will be obliged to close our establishments which are gradually running out of medicines as we are unable to pay our suppliers.”
According to the statement, which is entitled “Your Chemist Informs You,” dispensing chemists in the region have not been paid for prescription drugs and medications since March 1, 2011 and claims that despite verbal and written assurances from the regional Government the debt remains unpaid.
“The society must understand we have negotiated to the limit….we have maintained our silence in order not to alarm the citizens but we cannot resist any more. It’s simple: if we are not paid, we can´t pay.”
The statement is dated April 29, 2011 and appeared in La Verdad regional newspaper today, Monday May 2, 2011.
