CAMPAIGN AGAINST PRESCRIPTION CHARGES

The campaign against prescription charges, part of the changes to the Law of Dependants introduced by the current government, comes to Calasparra on Monday.
The campaigners aim to collect 500,000 signatures to pressurize the Congress of Deputies into changing the law.
The Dependents Law was introduced by the Socialist Government nine years ago and is roughly equivilant to the UK Disability Living Allowance. Under the law disabled, elderly and those below the poverty line did not pay for prescriptions. However, the current government of the Partido Popular introduced a system of different prescription charges which are earnings related. Most pensionsers, disabled people and the long term sick now have to pay a charge for their medications.
The campaigners do not want to reject all prescription charges but state that they should be “aceptable and just and not expel people from the system.”
Signatures will be collected on Monday September 7 in the Plaza de la Corredera from 11am and in the entrance to the Bull Ring from 4pm.
