CALL FOR RESIDENTS DENOUNCE TIP IN PROTECTED ZEPA AREA

The Secretary of the Residents Association of Valentin has called on local residents to “denounce” a public rubbish tip in an area where birds are protected by a ZEPA order.
Juan Felipe Perez Andreu told Radio Calasparra: “It’s unbelievable that, despite support from local authorities in Calasparra and Cehegin and public protests, the tip has been installed”.
“”We are helpless confronted with this environmental attack on the Sierra del Puerto in Valentin….every day lorries and dustbin lorries are dumping waste in a pond, which is in danger of contaminating underwater water and the nearby reservoir,” he claims.
The tip was opened in November despite pending legal action to prevent it instigated by the Residents´ Association.
“It makes me sad that society has not reacted in a forceful manner when confronted with this barbarism, which puts our very future in peril,” he added, pleading with residents to denounce the opening of the tip, which, he describes as, “a true disaster.”
Andreu said: “One day we will know what is hidden behind the installation of this tip in a zone specially protected for birds (ZEPA). The technical reports are in the hands of the courts, we trust in justice. However, up to now all our efforts to prevent the tip opening have come to nothing.
