There will be no grand procession for the Three Magic Kings this year as Spain breaks with a popular tradition which dates back to 1885.
The Covid-19 epidemic renders grand procession and crowds too dangerous this year but Calasparra Town Hall is making sure the hundreds of local children waiting anxiously for their arrival, will not be disappointed.
Their Majesties have already arrived and were officially received at the Town Hall this
morning by the Mayoress and members of her team.
Calasparra town centre is being prepared for their visit and clowns and cartoon characters are already in the street to create an atmosphere and preserve this age old tradition, within the limits of the Covid.19 protocols.
Traditionally the Magic Kings arrive in the late afternoon of January 5 bearing sweets and gifts for the children. This year there will be no procession but the children will be able to have an audience with the royal visitors.
The celebration has its roots in the Old Testament which tells of the Kings Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar travelling throughout the night from remote parts of the earth to pay homage to the divinity of Jesus.
In 1885 the Spanish Government announced the first Horse Drawn Procession on January 5 and the tradition has become a popular final part of the Christmas celebrations all over Spain.
