CALASPARRA COMMEMORATES WORST MASSACRE OF CIVIL WAR

Calasparra will celebrate Days of Historic Memory on February 21 and 22 under the title «La Desbandá that Came to Murcia» and mark the massacre of civilians fleeing Malaga by Franco´s forces in 1937 during which, many who escaped, were received by Republican areas in the Murcia region.
The flight of civilians and republican forces from Malaga on the Malaga-Almeria Road became known as the «Disbandá».
The project aims to publicise, intensify and highlight the facts of the «Desbandä» and the impact on the Murcia region and coincides with the annual Historic Memory Prize of Murcia presented this year to the Social Cultural Asociation of the Desbandá.
The Mayoress of Calasparra, Teresa Garcia, with the President and the Secretary of the Federation of Historic Memory Associations  have presented the programme which includes a play and  a documentary commemorating the flight of thousands of people, many women and children, fleeing from Franco´s forces in February 1937.
It was on February 6 to 8 that Franco´s forces bombed, by sea and by air,  the Republican stronghold of Malaga forcing the evacuation  of between 100,000 and 150,00 who fled city by foot on the road to Almeria. Some 3-5000 were killed in
bombardments on the road in one of the worst massacres of the Spanish Civil War.
Those who survived the massacre, mainly women, elderly people and children, were sheltered in terrorities loyal to the Republic, such as areas of the Murcia region, and have become part of the region´s history.
