A Calasparrian who was queueing outside the Guardia Civil headquarters to register his protest against the organisation of the vote for the modernisation of the irrigation systems was run over “by accident,” according to official sources.
The incident occurrred yesterday as members of the Farmers and Smallholders Association (Associación de Regantes) opposed to the modernistion plans queued for the second day running to lodge their “denuncias” with the Guardia Civil. The victim was at the tail end of the queue when he was struck by a van. The impact led to an epilectic attack and he was taken to hospital.
According to official sources the accident was the result of “carelessness” and was “not intentional.” However, the stand off between the supporters and the opposition to the modernisation of the irrigation systems has become more entrenched and bitter during the last few weeks.
The opposition complains that they were unable to enter the Municipal Auditorium on Saturday to protest during the voting and the Association of Regantes claims they were obliged to remain outside the building because their protests disrupted the previous vote which had to be cancelled due to public disorder.
The vote on Saturday was overwhelmingly in support of the modernisation, however, the queues to lodge “denuncias” at the Guardia Civbil are expected to continue through today.
